OLD TOWN CHUR

Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland. We also claim that Chur is the northernmost city in Italy. When you walk through Chur's old town, it becomes clear why: the alleys are wonderfully preserved and full of life. People drink coffee or enjoy aperitifs in the squares, almost like in Italy.

ARCHITECTURE

With the protective structure designed by Peter Zumthor for the Roman excavations found in Welschdörfli, Chur has buildings that are internationally reknown. A retirement home is also one of the star architect's earlier works. Whether it's the extension to the art museum or Valerio Olgiati's design of the cantonal parliament, Chur combines modern architecture and historical buildings found in the old town. Excursions from Chur to the Vals thermal baths, the Sogn Benedetg chapel or the Salginatobel bridge are also possible at any time.

PUBLIC ART

In recent years, Chur has become a true street art metropolis. The most talented artists regularly decorate empty house facades at the Street Art Festival, and works of art by HR Giger, Robert Indermaur, Not Vital and Niki de Saint Phalle are freely accessible. Discover them on an art tour through the city.

HIKING

Discover Chur's local mountain, Brambrüesch, by taking the cable car directly from the city center up the mountain. An experience that only a few cities can offer. For experienced hikers, a trip to the "Rote Platte" is a must. For more leisurely walks, the "Fürstenwald" forest or a stroll along the Rhine are ideal. The Rhine Gorge, the Swiss Grand Canyon, and numerous other mountain hikes in the area also make Chur the ideal starting point for hiking enthusiasts.

SNOW SPORTS

Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowshoeing: whatever you want to call it, the options are numerous. Chur not only has its own ski area, Brambrüesch, but is also centrally located for exploring the largest and most snow-sure ski areas in Switzerland. Flims/Laax/Falera with Europe's largest halfpipe or Arosa/Lenzerheide with 225 km of slopes can be reached from Chur in under an hour by public transport. Numerous other ski areas are even just 30 minutes away from the capital of Graubünden.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

Graubünden is also called the “Home of Trails” and Chur can rightly call itself the capital of this bike kingdom. The Alpine Bike Park on the local mountain Brambrüesch offers five trails with three different levels of difficulty and a 1000m difference in altitude! The city is also very easy to explore by bike.

TRAIN TRAVEL

Two of the most beautiful train routes in the world stop in Chur: the Glacier Express towards Zermatt and the Bernina Express towards Italy. The Bernina Express route of the Rhaetian Railway is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and runs directly through the Rhine Gorge. We highly recommend travelling by train. The Post bus network also takes you from Chur to the most remote valleys of Graubünden.
